Organizing its first neighborhood association in 1973, Allandale currently celebrates its thirty-fifth anniversary as an active Austin community. Home to over 21,000 residents, Allandale was originally considered a northwest Austin suburb. Now, after years of steady expansion and improvements, the community is affectionately referred to as "Central Austin."
With the Mo-Pac and Burnet road forming the western and eastern boundaries respectively, and with Anderson lane and Shoal Creek forming the north and south, Allandale is currently the 28th largest neighborhood group in Austin. In spite of its great location fifteen minutes from downtown and nearby amenities, real estate in Allandale is very affordable. Typical residences are single-family homes with 3-4 bedrooms and in a variety of architectural styles. House prices average between $250,000 and $300,000 and the diverse community is a mix between young families, young professionals, and elderly residents.
A member of the Austin Independent School District, Allandale is also the home of Gullett Elementary, Lamar Middle, and McCallum High Schools. Residents cite the schools and the community churches as further reasons for why the neighborhood is active and thriving. With the help of the very active Allandale Neighborhood Association, parents and children now can enjoy the newly improved Beverly Sheffield Park. In addition, the Northwest Recreation Center is a perfect venue for indoor sports and activities.
